Whiskey Tangent

Whiskey wit and wisdom from two guys who like to put it in their mouths and talk about it

So, you know when you're hung over and you just have to get some "hair of the dog" to chase away all the "screaming of the cats"?  Well, that's what happened after our IrishFest 2022 Episode when we woke up with cotton mouth and a pounding headache, and then discovered that we had two more Irish whiskeys to try. So, did we get sick of the Irish? Or is our blood now green in solidarity? Click play and find out!

Irish coffee is a classic combination of coffee and Irish whiskey, so it seems fitting that the first coffee-flavored whiskey would come from the classic Irish whiskey distiller, Jameson. But is it a sugar bomb like so many other flavored whiskeys? Or does it strike the beautiful balance that real Irish coffee provides? Well, just click play and join us as we give it a taste, tell the tale of how the first Irish coffee came to be, and make some of our own!

As you know there are a ton of new "distilleries" out there that call themselves distillers but don't actually distill anything. That's not necessarily bad, but it's basically lying. However, Starlight is not one of these. Their unique situation allowed them to ferment and age whiskey using their own grains on their own land and according to their own schedule. And what's the result of all this care and carefulness, you ask? Well, just click play and listen in!  (Also, just FYI, we refrained from singing Madonna's "Lucky Star" which has "Starlight" in the chorus. You're welcome.)

Several months ago, when we tasted Pinhook's Vertical 5-Year Bourbon, not only did we enjoy the whiskey, we were intrigued by the promise of their concept: Take a set of barrels and bottle only a portion of the spirit once a year, every year, for 9 years. So, here we are, expecting greater things from their 6 Year. Did a single year make a difference? And if so, is it even better? Smash that play button and find out!

If the King of Rock 'n Roll were still alive, he would have turned 86 (!) just a month ago, and yet he's still one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th Century. And to celebrate his lasting legacy, a whiskey was created (actually two whiskeys!) in his honor. So, join us as we taste both whiskeys and talk about his amazing life and surprising influence on other music legends, including the three "B"s: The Beatles, Barry White, and Björk. Yes, f**king Björk. Swan dress and everything.

Here at the WTP, we like not only having the freedom to drink your whiskey how you want, but also the freedom that comes with living in a country that allows us to think, speak, and act for the betterment of others.  (Note: It's also the name of the song that starts and ends our shorts.)  So, if you serve, or have served, in our armed forces to protect these rights, we salute and thank you.  And we drink this whiskey—sent in by a listener and made by veterans—in your honor.  Cheers!

Two years ago we highlighted 13 "scary" (i.e., disgusting) spirits from around the world in an attempt to gross out our listeners, and hell if we didn't succeed our wildest expectations. And now we're back with 13 more! So, sit back, relax, reach for some whiskey and Halloween candy, and, you know, try not to vomit. We dare you.

By now everyone knows we belong to the Local Lounge in Mt. Holly, NJ, which is managed by frequent guest host Anders the Master Mixologist. But not everyone knows that he got a chance to pick a barrel of WhistlePig of his very own, bottles of which are available to members and patrons alike! So, we decided to sit down with Anders to find out how it all went down, and then taste it to see how good a barrel strength single barrel can actually be.

And if you think you know who really owns the whiskey in this bottle, prepare to have your mind blown.

So, let's face it, Texas has gone through some controversial stuff recently. But there's nothing controversial about their whiskey industry, which is just bursting at the seams with a ton of good hooch. And when we were asked to review some samples of a blend of Texas whiskeys, we of course said yee-haw! So, join us as we taste a first-of-its kind whiskey, and then find out how it all got made from co-founder Nico Martini.

Ok, so we have to admit that Jim Beam (the brand) hasn't been a particular favorite of ours over the years. However, the Beam distillery makes some amazing products. So, when we discovered that they had a Bottled-in-Bond expression, our interest was certainly piqued. And yet... having been burned in the past (looking at you White Label), we didn't really have very high expectations. So, this could either be an incredible sleeper whiskey or a James E. Pepper-level sh*t show. Tune in to find out which!

We consider regular old Larceny Bourbon to be the best wheated bourbon you can buy under $50. So, what happened when Heaven Hill decided to release a barrel strength expression only 3 times a year? Well, accolades, awards, scarcity, and crazy motherf**ing prices on the secondary market, that's what. But we've finally gotten our grubby hands on a bottle and decided to share the experience with you. Could it possibly be good enough to justify all the love? Tune in and find out!

In 2020, as an extension of our first Whiskey Madness blind tasting tournament (where the whiskeys were all $25-$60), we performed a double-blind tasting on four high-end expressions ($60-$100+). However, for 2021, we've done the opposite and picked four low-end expressions ($10-$25) to see if we can find a hidden gem on the bottom shelf. But this time, we're triple blinded. And just what the hell does that mean, you ask? Well, click play to find out!
