Whiskey Tangent

Two guys who like to put whiskey in their mouths and talk about it. Not at the same time, though. That’d be rude af.

Join us and a couple of friends as we taste the latest release from Beam Suntory, their first new brand in almost 30 years. (That's not a typo!) It's a blended bourbon, yes, but with an interesting twist. It's all the same famous Kentucky mashbill spirit, but a portion of it was finished in ex-wine barrels and another portion was finished in ex-sherry barrels, after which it was all blended together with some good ol' Japanese know-how.

Plus, we were lucky enough to score an interview with Senior Brand Ambassador, Adam Harris, and things got downright belligerent! Lol we're kidding. Adam's a great guy, and we had a great chat about some great whiskey. (Now if only Ed and Gabe could get along so well.)

So if you've been listening for awhile, you know that Ed is 0-3 in Quiskeys. He lost once to Anders and twice to Gabe. But now he has a chance to get his revenge on both of them at the same time in our first threeway! Wait, no, that came out wrong. It's our first threeway competition, featuring... New questions! New buzz-in system! New scoring penalties! New sound effects! And a new winner? Well, there's just one way to find out! (Um, by clicking "Play" if that wasn't already clear. Oh sure fine, go get a sandwich first. Sheesh. God forbid you wait 18 minutes to eat again.)

Take one venerable Scotch company, add two talented whiskey blenders, give them five completely different tasting bourbons, and what do you get? Well, you get another fine expression in the continuing trend of blending American whiskeys, something once considered to be just about the worst thing you can do. But, really, that's because "a blend" used to be just a cover for truly terrible whiskey. Today, we use Fireball for that. #sorrynotsorry

Having been big fans of Irish whiskey for awhile now, we're excited to see the many new distilleries and expressions coming out of Ireland after decades of languishing behind the other countries enjoying the benefits of a resurgent whiskey industry. And The Sexton is one of these new expressions. Not only is the bottle cool as hell (just look at it!), it also has an interesting backstory.  But none of that truly matters unless the whiskey itself is actually any good.  So... is it?  Tune in and find out!

Pop quiz, Whiskey Peeps! What does maple syrup, the Brooklyn Bridge, 10-year-old whiskey, and the Magna Carta all have in common? If you need a hint, it has to do with some old abandoned limestone mines located in Upstate New York, but seriously, that's all you're getting. You can find out in just 14 minutes if you just press play. I mean, if we reveal everything in the description, then there's no reason to listen at all. Hmm... maybe we should just do a blog. It would probably be a whole lot easier than dragging out all the equipment, recording an hour of material, editing out our dumb crap, publishing it on our podcast site, etc., etc. Hell, we had to come up with this description, why not just write the entire damn thing out in an article and be done with it?!

Round 1: Maker’s Sour – Maker’s Mark Cask Strength Bourbon (109.6), simple syrup, lemon juice, cherry, lemon peel

Ok, so we lied. Whiskey Madness 2020's The Final Pour was not, in fact, the final pour. But here we switch up the guest taster, remove the under-$60 restriction, allow ourselves more whiskey to taste, and taste them double-blinded so that nobody knows which whiskey is which. So what does all that mean? It means we drank too much, got a little belligerent with each other, and it all nearly spiraled out of control. Enjoy!

This is a special announcement regarding a change in our schedule for the forseeable future, which brings to mind that time Beavis & Butthead were watching TV and the video of Culture Club's 80s hit "Karma Chameleon" came on...

Butthead: "Hey Beavis, is this supposed to be, like, in the future?"

Beavis: "Yeah, the future sucks. Change it."

Butthead: "I'm pretty cool, Beavis. But I can't change the future."

But we can, Beavis. We can.

Join us as we open and taste our second attempt at building an Infinity Bottle. (And if you don't know what one of those is, please do go back and listen to our previous Sho(r)t on "How to Build an Infinity Bottle" from early October 2019). But that's not all! We actually saved some of our first bottle to compare! AND we have a guest who made their own! Hilarity ensues! You know the drill by now. ;-)

Winter 2020 may be officially over, but we’ve still got one thing to say. Ok, SEVERAL things. So, won’t you join us for a look back as we revisit the past 6 months, give some shout-outs, recap all the epsiodes, and generally try not to talk too much about the #coronapocalypse.

So, the good outweighs the bad, right?

A few months ago we debated the merits of Ranker.com's Top 10 Bourbon list. This time, we're getting both more and less specific: Less specific because we're considering all American whiskeys, and more specific because we're considering only the patrons of a single bar in our home state. And if you've been listening to us for any amount of time, you know the one. So, will this list mirror Ranker's Top 10? Or will we, in true Jersey fashion, give the middle finger to the rest of the country and pick our own damn whiskeys? (Haha right, we all know the answer to that.)

Whiskeys: Heaven’s Door Whiskey • Crown Royal XO • Crown Royal Signature Series • Crown Royal Blender’s Mash • Crown Royal Black • Crown Royal Wine Finish • Crown Royal XR • Lambay Irish Whiskey Cognac Finish • Sagamore Spirit Cognac Finish Rye • Belle Meade XO Cognac Finish Bourbon • Chivas Regal XV • Glenlivet Captain’s Reserve Scotch • Brenne French Single Malt • Jameson Irish Whiskey • Teeling’s Irish Whiskey • Tullamore Dew XO • Angel’s Envy Rye

Tangents: Ed’s son Mike (aka Choc Mic) finally joins us! • Celebrity spirits aren’t automatically terrible • The Laws of Cognac • Hennessey Cognac tasting • Mike throws shade at Ed for not inviting him earlier • Cognac age statements • The list of people who co-hosted the podcast before Mike • Ozzy Osbourne drank Cognac and Coke every day for years • The history of Crown Royal • Barney has a purple sack • Crown Royal is the #2 brand of whiskey in America (!) • The hip-hop world loves flavored spirits • Millennials like mixed drinks more than straight spirits (but Gen-X did too) • Crown Royal XO vs. Crown Royal tasting • The extremely short history of Lambay whiskey • Mike, Scott, and Ed’s worst puking tales • Lambay tasting • Even alcohol is all about race! • Mike’s Jamaica Cognac drinking story and advice

A few months ago, your bourbon boys unboxed basically the best barrel-proof small batch you can buy when we imbibed some Booker's. Ok, folks, real talk: Ed is 0-2 in quizzes on this podcast, and he's not happy about it. This time, however, Scott (inadvertantly, he swears) ends up stacking the deck against Ed by placing him in direct competition with an actually whiskey lounge bartender (Anders from Episode #15) in a quiz about whiskey slang.

So, listen in as we all learn a bit about whiskey slang (as defined by four master distillers) and find out how Ed does!

As you know by now, we drink a LOT of whiskey. So, we wondered what would happen if we took a little bit of each one and blended them together using a concept known as an Infinity Bottle, which is a pretty exciting experiment. But to be completely honest, now that we've done it, we're terrified that we've just wasted hundreds of dollars on a Frankenstein's monster’s ass trainwreck. But there's also a chance it'll be the best damn thing we've ever tasted. Welp, only one way to find out!  #stillafraid

Summer may be officially over, but we’ve still got one last thing to say. Ok, several last things. So, join us for a look back as we revisit our podcast origins, give some listener shout-outs, recap all the epsiodes, and talk about why we couldn’t have done any of it without you. Yes, you. No, not you. YOU. Yeah, we’ve been watching you for a while now. And, man, the things we’ve seen. But don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone. Especially about that thing you did with the pudding. Dude. So gross.

Last Things: The impetus for the podcast • Van Halen’s brown M&M rider • Hannibal Lecter & our bad mic discipline • Listener shout-outs • We promise to do a Canadian whiskey episode • Brazil needs to start listening dammit! • Scott’s simple rules for editing podcasts • We got a free bottle of Bulleit Rye • Ed’s simple rules for getting better pours • EPISODE RECAPS • Scott makes “Scotthattans” • Why we don’t talk politics • Ed gets his drink taken away • Whiskey Sho(r)ts • Heaven Hill distillery might win our year-end whiskey count • Scott has to “get it up” • We promise to do a Scotch episode • A sincere thank you to our listeners

Should just anyone be allowed to choose the top 10 of anything? Or should it be left to experts who are knowledgeable about the things they're ranking? Well, just like top 10 lists themselves, that's endlessly debatable. And yet! Crowd sourcing is a huge thing now. Big Data uses your info to sell you useless crap. Astronomers use volunteer computing power to search for exoplanets. And now randos use the internet to argue about the best bourbons. So, listen in as we debate the merits of these lists and then injure our shoulders by patting ourselves on the back for getting it all so f**king right. After all, we're part of the great unwashed, too. (But not really, we totally shower. Sometimes every week!)
